There are a lot of brands on the market, and the choice of an instrument is sometimes subjective. After a short learning curve, my daughter was able to produce clear consistent tones, and quickly get up to "speed" during Jazz band practice. Get one that is in funky condition and get it fixed. If you want almost every note to be in tune and have an easy articulating horn, this is a pretty good choice. All of them I've played made that little i rritating noise. I compare it to some of my preferred horns and it really is generic sounding. I argue about the sound of Yamaha saxophones in general.
Repair techs here already are familiar with the adjustments on a 23. Here in the States, the 23 is probably a better buy though the price is generally high. I buy mostly 21s because I am exporting them to Guatemala. The 23 has more advanced technological features. My clients don't really understand the difference between a YAS 21 and the Yas 23. I choose something else for my personal instrument though many people I am buying horns for want a Yamaha. These are good saxophones for most players.
